The other night we were finally able to take a break from driving, setting up, breaking down and sleeping to go into New Orleans. Richard was gracious enough to take me into the Big Easy, even though I know he much rather have chilled out at the trailer. Let’s say, if you have never been it is a must see at least once. The sights and sounds of the Vieux Carre̛, the French Quarter, or as the locals call it, the “Quarter”, were to say the least, exciting and interesting. I think the best way to describe our experience is through the video attached. But just to give you some highlights of our night.
We parked at the corner of Toulouse and Decautur, right down the street from the famous Café du Monde. The cost was not too bad, you fed a meter box, $7.00 for one hour and I think $12 for two. We only paid for one hour thinking that would be enough time to walk around and experience the area, it wasn’t. Poor Richard had to run back to put more money in the meter. I recommend putting in for more hours than you think cause if you are like us, we got caught up in all the excitement and one hour is definitely not enough time.
We were fortunate to see a parade, or what is referred to as a “Second Line” which according to the gentleman’s sign that was in the lead was celebrating a 25th anniversary of something. Interestingly enough, when I spoke to my Son-in-Law, Neil later that night he informed me that you can purchase your own, Second Line. So curiosity got the better of me, and I did some research. While researching I found this post that goes into pretty good detail if you want further information.
After making it to the famous Bourbon Street, we ducked into a place called Spirits. I just had to experience what it was like to walk down the streets with a drink. I do not know if this was a good idea or not, because it seems like their drinks are a little bit stronger than what I am used to, not that I drink all that much. I had no idea what to order, so I saw a sign for a Flashing Resurrection, seemed good to me. I asked the bartender if I should ask what was in it, he politely said, “NO.” So I went for it. As he poured out the frozen concoction from the machine, he promptly added about two shot of Makers Mark Whiskey on top and dropped in a slice of jalapeño. Yes, jalapeño! Okay Stacy don’t have a heart attack. I drank it, hotness and all!
I don’t have to tell you that after half a glass, served in a flashing skull cup, I was a bit snockered. Onward bound. We made our way down Bourbon Street, me snapping pictures along the way, which for some reason became fuzzier and fuzzier. After about an hour of dealing with me, sloshing the drink around and onto Richard at one point, he was ready to call it a night. But wait, we needed to make one more stop; Café Du Monde! Of course Richard thought perhaps with me being a little inebriated it might not be a good idea to partake of sweets, but how can you pass up getting a Café Au Lait and some of their famous Beignets? And just so you know, they were awesome and the Café Au Lait was just the thing I needed after that Flashing Resurrection!
Warning: The Beignets are messy!!!! I spent the next morning getting powder sugar off the front seat and dash of the truck. Well what more can I say, even Richard had fun on our brief trip into the “Quarter”.
More to come and travel on!
