Rockahock campground is a quiet location, situated on the Chickahominy river. We recently spent a month there and I have to say that we quite enjoyed it and I think it was a perfect place for us to get acclimated to our new digs. They offer several types of accommodations for RV’s sites, cottages, yurts and lake side villas. For more information on sites offered please follow this link. All in all, the campground was nice, quiet and provided all the amenities that we needed. It is about 30 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown if those are on your agenda. It can be a reasonable alternative to staying in Williamsburg itself.
They do offer different events throughout the year. When we were staying there they had a Faith, Family & Fellowship week. This offered vacation Bible camp for the kids as well as a daily Bible study for adults. The week culminated with a special speaker for the weekend and they had a baptism on Sunday afternoon in which 40 people were baptized. Coming up on September 17 – 18th there will be a Bluegrass Faith Festival, as well as other planned activities throughout the year
On site they have a laundry facility, two bath houses, boat ramp, pool, fishing pier and camp store. We found the laundry facility to be adequate, the shower stalls were separate rooms which were reached from outside the building where the restrooms were located. These were nice, however they lacked ventilation, so I recommend if you will be using their facilities, take a shower first thing in the morning or later in the evening so that you do not roast. They also have a restaurant on site, Walker’s Dam Grill which features Italian fare, reservations are recommended due to its popularity for locals and can be made online at their website walkersdamgrill.com. Be aware that both the camp store and the restaurant are closed on Monday’s.
The town of Lanexa offers two gas stations, each that have someone that pumps your gas for you, yes I did say they pump the gas for you! The cost of gas is usually more reasonable than you find in Williamsburg. Each of these stores offer convenience items, but as far as a grocery store, the closest is in Providence Forge, 10 minutes away. In addition, there is a winery, Saude̛ Creek Vineyards, which is 20 minutes from the Campground. So if you enjoy the quiet of country life, this would be a great place to stay and still be conveniently located to surrounding area attractions.
One final note, there is no open containers of alcohol allowed throughout the campground due to ABC laws and they do not sell alcohol in the camp store. The restaurant does offer drinks and has a full bar. This is also a great place for sunsets. There are two locations I would recommend. One is near the entrance gate, there is a field of sorts next to the gate house, by the river. Most of my sunset pictures found in the gallery, came from this location. You can also see the sunset from the pier.
