On the Road to Weslaco Texas… Part II

October 3, 2016

Whewwwww!!!!! That is about all I can say at the moment. We are at our last stop before we head into Weslaco Texas tomorrow and I have to admit it has been one heck of a road trek. I have put together some pictures from the road for each state starting with Georgia, since it really did not cross my mind to do that before Georgia. I am sure that Richard is thankful for that, the clicking of the camera has, I think started to get on his nerves!!! Or should I say my taking pictures of what he feels is random stuff, and I am sure some pictures are, have led him to believe that I am a happy clicking picture chick with a capital Annoying! But you never know what you are going to see, and honestly sometimes it makes the time go by faster on the drive to our next location.

Perhaps as our time on the road gets further under my belt I won’t be so picture happy but this is a once in a lifetime experience and I want to remember and share it with you all! I teased him and told him when he becomes old and senile I will pull out the pictures and remind him of this time together. But I am sure that it will probably be the other way around. Him showing me the pictures to remind me of our time on the road. Either way, I want to capture the things we see for future reference. Okay I am rambling but it has been a long road so far and I think we are a bit nervous to finally be hitting our destination tomorrow for our first work camping job.

So what can I say, we have settled into a routine of loading and unloading, working around each other in a small space and praying for safety and God’s provision along the way. We have had an opportunity that few have traveled and we thank the Lord for the time He has given us to be together and to learn, interestingly enough after 30 some years, more about one another. A small space will do that along with not having television most of the time. We have learned to rely on God more and each other as well. It even seems that Rufus has started to get the hang of the routine and he seems to be enjoying the trip as well. Even in the midst of the storm of things going wrong!

We have had delays, such as sitting in the parking lot of a Home Depot after breaking a leaf spring on the trailer thanks to the lovely route 90 in Louisiana. The road is so horrendous with the waves caused by sugar cane trucks, who do not have a weight limit, that you feel like you are riding in a horse and buggy. At one point it became so ridiculous that all we could do was laugh, that is until the spring broke in Lafayette Louisiana. We thank God that we were not in the boonies somewhere, and that I had thought to get roadside assistance from Good Sam’s Club before leaving home, which covers both the truck and the trailer. We would not have had any idea who to call for help, they were able to find someone and get them out within an hour.

This left us responsible for the labor and parts but at least we got someone reliable and did not have to pay for the service call as well. We want to thank Gerard Thibodeaux from Thibodeaux’s Truck and Trailer Repair for coming to our rescue and I have put up his information if you are ever in need and in the area see our resources and Links page here. Just when we thought all that could happen was behind us, we decided to go into Historic Galveston Island, The Strand on the last day we were on the Island. Interestingly enough right before we left the campground I got this feeling that the truck would not start, but it did and we made our way into the Strand area. Really cute area with shops and restaurants. Well when we finished up we headed back to the truck and guess what it would not start! Ugh…. Brand new truck and no go. We called Good Sam’s Roadside assistance again and they were sending someone out to jump start us.

As we sat there Richard got this feeling like it was not just going to need a jump start. So we do have bumper to bumper coverage on the truck through Nissan for 100,000 miles, which we are nowhere near. Richard thought it better to call them and see what they could do. Now granted it is almost three o’clock in the afternoon on a Saturday, what were they going to be able to do? Most service centers in Williamsburg Virginia would not be open on Saturdays let alone be able to help us. Well the people at Nissan Warranty were very helpful. Sent a tow truck out to tow us to dealership but they were saying probable would not get fixed until Monday.

Fly in the ointment there. We were supposed to be in Weslaco on Monday. Plus, here we are sitting 40 minutes from the campground, Rufus at the camper, no transportation and it looking like no transportation until Monday? I immediately Facebooked asking for prayer, texted a few of my prayer warriors and got God on the line. The tow truck drive got to us around 3:30pm, jumpstarted the truck but said battery bad needed to get to service center right away. We called the closest which was 20 minutes and they said as long as we got there before 5pm we were good. Guess what we got there, got a new battery, because it was bad after they tested it, it was covered under warranty and we were able to be back at the camper by 5:30pm and Rufus was no worse for the wear.

I tell you all this because I want you to know that even in the midst of the darkest or most ridiculous circumstances, God hears our prayers and He answers them. He took care of us, yes it was scary and yes, it is scary that we had to put out over $350.00 on parts and labor for the trailer but we have confidence that God will provide not only for our physical needs but also our financial ones as well. It is during those times that we are reminded, Richard and I, that we serve an all-powerful Lord, that can do what we cannot do and can give us reminders of who we should rely on through adversity. His word tells us in 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

Please remember to pray and ask God, for He will bless you and keep you, he will take care of you in times of need and above all know that He loves you no matter where you are in your life. And with that I say good night and God bless!

More to come and travel on!
